Goals

There has been a lot of change in the industry that I work in.  A lot of change at the company I work for. For many, change is hard. I am a creature of habit. I don't like change. I have struggled with some of the recent changes in my life, both personally and professionally. I decided to put the changes in my life into perspective and ask myself a few simple questions. "How does this change affect my goals? Is the change hurting me, or helping me? Is the change hurting my team at work, or helping them?" Same question for my family.

I took some time to sit down in a quiet place with a pencil and paper and write down my goals. With no direction or organization at all, I just wrote down every goal in my consciousness. Then decided to prioritize by professional goals and personal goals. I realized that my personal list needed to be separated by family and personal(me) goals. As I ran out of paper, lead in the pencil and patience, I then went digital with my list. Going digital allowed me to then prioritize my goals to daily, weekly, monthly and annually.

Looking at my goals (On paper) has helped me understand how change affects me. Asking myself the simple question, "Does this change in my life affect the goal or goals I have?" As I look at my goals I see that (Though change is hard) I am still able to navigate a way in my head to get to the goal(s)I aspire to. Looking at change this way helps me feel better about it.

Now, I am no doctor. I'm not a counseling professional. I am just a guy looking for ways to be successful in life. Sometimes I am my own worst enemy, because my mind gets in the way of my personal progress. Using my goals to navigate change has helped me.  Maybe it can help you too.

The three most important goals I have are to teach something, learn something and help someone each day I am on this earth. If I can complete these, I believe everything else will fall into place.
