2023 NFL Season - Week 13
Greetings from Evansville, Indiana. I’m in town to scan our racks that uplink local channels to #DIRECTV and generally “Kick the tires” to make sure all is good here in EVIN. I usually stay at the @Hyatt or the #Doubletree, and this week Hyatt won the coin toss.
Downtown Evansville went through a revitalization a few years ago and now there are some great local restaurants and bars in walking distance to the #FordCenter. My favorite restaurant downtown is Comfort by the Cross Eyed Cricket. Love this place. Wonderful food. It’s a three story establishment with a private bar/room upstairs for parties and private receptions, main floor for general dining and a basement bar with food as well. No teles here so the focus is on food, and they do a wonderful job. They have a sign on the wall as you head downstairs that says "Were so glad you are here". I am always glad to be there.
My usual M/O is to eat at the comfort and then head
over to another establishment next to the Ford Center that is a
#DIRECTVforBUSINESS customer. At this place I can get some great local tacos
and watch the sports game dejour for the evening. Tonight on #MNFonDIRECTV it was the "Filedgoal Festival" between the Bears and the Vikings. I am not naming the
establishment because of what happened next.
For the record, when I am on the road I am almost always wearing
DIRECTV apparel. I believe that my job requires professional attire, and so I
am always “Logo’d” as I was tonight. As
I sat at the bar to scan the teles I notices that some were off an some had no sports programming on at all. I asked what was going on with the teles and
when the server saw the logo on my shirt she became very agitated and basically
exploded into a tirade about how bad our product is and that it does not work.
I politely offered assistance to resolve the issues but was sternly rebuked.
This server was not interested in solving any problems. No assistance was
welcomed. This server did not know who I was. This server does not know what my
job is at DIRECTV. This server did not
care. Complaints and tacos were the only
thing on the menu tonight.
When people are mean to me, I do not fight back. I do not argue. I recoil and move
on. I do not associate with mean people.
I do not befriend haters. I don’t have
the time or capacity to live in that world. In this case though, I did not
leave. I did not argue. I ordered my
desert (Tacos, of course…) and enjoyed them. That server never spoke to me
again that night. Someone else took my
order. When I left, I added a 100% tip to my $20 order and wrote on the receipt
that I was sorry for the issues with the teles.
I didn’t stop there though. I googled
the establishment and sent an email to their general mailbox and gave them the “888”
number to resolve their issues. I mentioned in the email that I could have
probably resolved their issues on the spot but was rebuked. I also mentioned that even though I will be
back to enjoy their food, I believe that the staff might need some training on
customer service skills. With much respect, I concluded my email.
This month I saw a young man at a grocery store who was
bagging groceries take a verbal beating by a shopper because the store he was
employed at did not have paper bags for the groceries. Yes, an underage “sacker”
got yelled at because his publicly traded company(KR)
didn’t have the right bags.
This month I was at the Chevrolet dealership and witnessed a
woman treat a service professional just horribly because her car did not
qualify for a certain recall procedure on her Chevrolet. Her car didn’t qualify
because she had the wrong model of vehicle and for some reason the corporate
ownership of GM sent out the wrong recall notice to her. Again, a service technician got the blunt end
of this ladies tongue because of his corporate ownership’s mistaken mailer.
I don’t understand when our country decided it was ok to start treating people poorly and doing so in public. I would never consider treating someone poorly like this. I was not raised that way. I am appalled that people actually treat other people this way.
I am not
here at DIRECTV for the money. I am here to make a
difference. I am here to bring a product
to the people that I believe in. I am proud of who I am, and I am proud of the
service my team offers. Concerning that restaurant, you bet I will be back. The
food is that good. I might ask for a different server though…
I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and I am
starting to look forward to our moratorium and enjoying the holidays with my
family!
