I think the greatest gift anyone can receive is knowledge. Tangible items will come and go, wear out, or possibly become irrelevant as time goes on. Knowledge however is both a gift to receive and share. Knowledge never goes out of style, keeps the mind focused and the person in perpetual forward motion. This week I received a box in the mail from the DIRECTVforBUSINESS team filled with Amazing books! I just completed Never Not Working, by Malissa Clark. Great book on workaholics and how to budget your time create a healthy work/life balance. For me, this book should have been called "DUH...". Who knew that working 70hrs a week was bad for you? Ya, that would be me. I highly recommend this book to any professional who might want to recalibrate their work/life balance. Click the photo for more information. My career in the DBS Industry began in 1999 when I was hired as an installer at an independent DIRECTV dealership in Las Vegas, Nevada. There were four of us at the time, each driving our own personal vehicles with ladders strapped to the roof, tools in the back seat, and coax cable in bed of a truck or the trunk of a car. At the time we were installing a round ODU with a single LNB obtaining programming from the 101 satellite and Los Angeles Locals (West of the Mississippi). Two wires from the LNB would connect to a 2x4 multiswitch allowing up to 4 receivers in a single house. Who remembers the old RCA Set top boxes? Those RCA receivers were cutting edge at the time, complete with S-Video outputs and stereo sound! I must have stapled miles of telephone cable to the baseboards of homes throughout Nevada, Eastern California, Western Utah and Northern Arizona in an effort to get the "Check System" to pass allowing the customer to order pay-per-view programming, and of course for me to get paid!
In 2000 we were offered the opportunity to move into the DIRECTV MDU business arena and wired up our first property. It was a "Handshake Deal" with the MSO at the time. My company provided the equipment and installation on our dime, and the MSO gave us all of the Consumer installations and corresponding revenue associated. We thought we were the "KINGS" of Satellite when we completed each building allowing (The first four) of eight tenants the opportunity to have DIRECTV in the living room of their apartment.
In 2003 I purchased the Dealership I worked at with a partner and became an owner/operator. In 2008 we returned to that same apartment complex in Las Vegas and retrofitted the original single "101" system I previously installed with a new technology called MFH-2 or "SWM". This allowed us to install up to 16 set top boxes in an 8-plex apartment building with an oval ODU hitting three Satellites offering HD and SD programming, Local Las Vegas channels and TiVo! It was an Amazing time to be a part of the DIRECTV Team.
I look back at all of the advancements DIRECTV has championed over the years with a tremendous amount of pride. Too many advancements to list in this column. So many great team members have come together over the years to make our products and technology the industry leader that is it today.
